The cast and creative team of En Garde Arts’ Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes) will lead a traditional community celebration in which attendees are invited to participate. The En Garde Arts professionals will guide participants through the steps of the Zapateado, a lively and percussive dance typically performed during Mexican fandangos. During the two-hour event, they will also share the ways in which improvised musical verses are created.

Mwenso and The Shakes artists Michael Mwenso, born in Sierra Leone, and Vuyo Sotashe, a native of South Africa, will discuss how Black cultural icons have helped them negotiate their LGBTQ+ identities while living in the United States. The informal one-hour conversation will include discussion of their musical influences and Black queer artists. 

The event is presented in partnership with the Penn State Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity.

Join Harlem-based roots band Mwenso and The Shakes for a Tuesdays on the Terrace performance. Inside the Music is an acoustic experience that brings you into the music while showcasing individual members of the band, each a stellar musician. Expore the history of Black music traditions while feeling the music down to your soul.

Tuesdays on the Terrace runs from 5–8 p.m. Mwenso and The Shakes is scheduled to perform in the third hour.

The British vocal ensemble VOCES8 will perform excerpts of its After Silence program. The singers also will discuss their creative process.

Snacks and refreshments will be served. Seating is limited. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Standing room is available when seating is full.

Presented by the Center for the Performing Arts and the Penn State Alumni Association in partnership with the Blue & White Society, the PSU Music Service Club, and the Penn State Coffee Club.
