Urban Bush Women performers will draw on African-American traditions and vocalization styles to engage participants in song and discovery of community connecting points.

Urban Bush Women artists will combine conversation, guided movement explorations, and performance highlights from Hair & Other Stories, its dance theatre piece about how color, length, and varying degrees of curl affect definitions of “good hair” and “bad hair” within and outside of the African-American community.

A partnership with Penn State Ballroom Dance Club

Children ages 5–12 will have an opportunity to learn basic ballroom dance steps. Attendance is limited to fifty people, and reservations are required by Thursday, January 31.

Attendees will have a chance to win a family four-pack of tickets to see Rodgers + Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I Thursday, March 28, at Eisenhower Auditorium.

Participants do not need dance experience or a dance partner. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The public is invited to participate in a Reader’s Theatre performance of Sheila’s Day by playwright Duma Ndlovu. The play explores the empowerment of black domestic workers through song, dance, and their collective struggle for freedom. Charles Dumas, Penn State professor emeritus of theatre, directs the two-hour event.

This one-hour event is inspired by the life of the late South African President Nelson Mandela and Soweto Gospel Choir’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth. Penn State students from various faith, cultural, and performance groups will showcase their organizations’ freedom songs, objects, and dances.

How can the power of art inspire change? Songs of the Free, Soweto Gospel Choir’s compilation of music loved by the late South African President Nelson Mandela, will be the touchstone for a discussion about notable student protests, localized effects, and elder perspectives in response to social justice. The two-hour discussion will be facilitated by Charles Dumas, Penn State professor emeritus of theatre, in conjunction with Annemarie Mingo, Penn State assistant professor of African American Studies and Women’s Studies, and Penn State undergraduate student Kiran Panday.

Bring your lunch and join Penn State School of Music faculty and students for a seventy-five-minute conversation with Grammy Award-winning composer Libby Larsen. One of America’s most-performed living composers, Larsen has written more than 500 works in a variety of genres. Cantus will perform the world premiere of Larsen’s You, a multi-movement work, later that day at Pasquerilla Spiritual Center.
