Hear the people who sing for the sea. Small Island Big Song unites islanders, who share an ancient seafaring ancestry and language, in a contemporary musical statement from a region on the frontline of cultural and environmental challenges.

One of the most important figures in jazz, Charles Mingus was a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader, and genius composer. He performed with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and other luminaries.

Meet Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage. Pouring her heart into her pies, she crafts desserts — such as “The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie” and “Betrayed by My Eggs Pie” — that mirror her topsy-turvy life.

What Problem?

What Problem? explores the tension between belonging to a community and feelings of isolation that many people have during these divisive political times. Bill T. Jones adapted What Problem? for proscenium stages from his massive work Deep Blue Sea (2020).

Artistic Viewpoints, an informal moderated discussion featuring Michael Mwenso, will be offered in Eisenhower Auditorium one hour before the performance and is free for ticket holders. AnneMarie Mingo, assistant professor of African American Studies and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Penn State, will moderate. Artistic Viewpoints seating is available on a first-arrival basis.

Enjoy a mini performance and discussion with the award-winning Calidore String Quartet. A New York Times critic praises the ensemble for its “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct.” A Los Angeles Times reviewer describes the quartet as “astonishing” and lauds its balance of “intellect and expression.” 

Complimentary snacks and beverages will be provided in an outdoor space on the way in to the Alumni Center or as a takeaway following the program. Seating is limited. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
