Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
with Wynton Marsalis
Masters of Form: From Mingus to Monk

7:30 pm Thursday, April 2, 2020

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra concert has been canceled.

Can a great composition be compared to the work of a master architect? The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis invites you to experience the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and George Russell from a new angle.

With music direction by orchestra trombonist Vincent Gardner, the band will start the concert by playing some of the most masterfully structured pieces in the jazz canon. The musicians will emphasize the brilliant layering and attention to form that allowed these composers to construct such distinctly expressive and enduring music.

The second half of the concert will expand upon the concept with a performance of Usonian Structures, a new suite created by Andy Farber, one of today’s finest big band composers and arrangers. The piece was inspired by the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and each movement is an interpretation or impression of one of Wright’s iconic designs.

The orchestra will be making its eighth appearance at Eisenhower Auditorium. Marsalis, who has visited Penn State with the big band and smaller ensembles, will perform on the Eisenhower stage for the ninth time.
