Compagnie Hervé Koubi
What the Day Owes to the Night

7:30 pm Wednesday, January 22, 2025

“A stunning fusion of acrobatics, gymnastics, b-boying, modern dance, and ballet.”–The Washington Post

French-Algerian choreographer Hervé Koubi, who trained as a medical doctor and a dancer, grew up in France unaware of his Algerian heritage. The revelation inspired him to launch a personal journey that led to the founding of his contemporary dance company.

Compagnie Hervé Koubi is a brotherhood of dancers primarily from North Africa, most with backgrounds in street dance. The internationally acclaimed performers combine expertise in capoeira, martial arts, hip-hop, and contemporary styles.

What the Day Owes to the Night uses explosive movement to metaphorically retrace Koubi’s family history. The score features music by Johann Sebastian Bach, and Hamza El Din with Kronos Quartet, as well as traditional Sufi music.

The Center for the Performing Arts and Student Affairs invite you to replenish.

Food is much more than what sits on our plates. Food intersects with nearly every aspect of our lives—from the communities and cultures we come from to issues of climate, food security, and our personal relationships with food.

Just like food, art comes from many forms, cultural backgrounds, and histories. At each Joyfull, we welcome all to come and enjoy a meal, live performance, and conversation.

When our bodies are hungry, we need to eat. But when our souls are hungry, we crave a different kind of nourishment. Join us for evenings of joyful expression, where we forge connections and leave with full bellies and full hearts. Feed your soul; savor the culture.

The program will begin in the lobby of Eisenhower Auditorium, followed by dinner in the Verne M. Willaman Gateway to the Sciences, third floor of the Huck Life Sciences Building. The menu will be North African-inspired cuisine. Entertainment will be announced closer to the event date.

Free sustainable utensil sets will be given to first-time attendees while supplies last. Help us reduce waste by bringing them with you to use at each Joyfull. We also will offer recipe cards at the event. If you would like to contribute, please bring a favorite recipe of your choosing to share with everyone! We hope to create a Joyfull cookbook with these shared recipes.
