Master Class featuring Dawn Upshaw

The public is invited to observe as soprano Dawn Upshaw leads a master class for selected students in the Penn State School of Music voice program. The two-hour master class includes performances of selections from: Claude Debussy’s Quatre Chansons de Jeunesse with soprano Juliana Alfano; Aaron Copland’s Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson with soprano Kaley Harmon; and George Frideric Handel’s Messiah with soprano Erin McDaniels. Pianist Svetlana Rodionova will accompany each soprano.

Hear choreographer and former Philadanco dancer Dawn Marie Bazemore in conversation with Kikora Franklin, associate professor of dance at Penn State. Bazemore created A Movement for Five for Philadanco in 2015. She will discuss the subject of the work—the case of the Central Park Five—and her connections to it. She will also describe the development of the dance and the reasons why socio-political art is vital to the community. Feel free to bring a lunch. Dessert and bottled water will be provided.

Learn basic salsa dance moves. This two-hour campus-and-community event is planned in anticipation of the performance by Spanish Harlem Orchestra November 9 at Eisenhower Auditorium. No dance experience, dance partner, or reservation required.
