Straight No Chaser to bring ‘Speakeasy Tour’ to Eisenhower April 11

Straight No Chaser, the a cappella answer to pop-music mashups, will return to Penn State with its “Speakeasy Tour” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in Eisenhower Auditorium.

The vocal ensemble will perform fun fusions of hit songs by popular artists—including Eurythmics, Fitz and the Tantrums, Bruno Mars, Beyoncé and Sam Cooke—as well as music from the recent release “Six Pack: Volume 3.”

Purchase tickets, which are $59.50 (adult plus 18 and younger) and $54.50 (University Park students) for a seat in rows AA through C of the orchestra section; $49.50 (adult plus 18 and younger) and $44.50 (University Park students) for a ticket in rows D through Z of the orchestra and in the grand tier; and $39.50 (adult plus 18 and younger) and $34.50 (University Park students) for a seat in the balcony.

The a cappella singing ensemble is “neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch.” The singers have built on a reputation as an extraordinary live act and blend tongue-in-cheek humor with serious vocal chops. They also have maintained a massive fan base with six full-length albums and four EP releases.

“Straight No Chaser … has gone to great lengths to challenge the notion of what to expect from an all-male a capella group,” wrote a critic for MLive.com.

“We want to have something there for everybody, so something new, something old,” Steve Morgan, one of the group’s vocalists, said in an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. “We want to give you a spectrum of things, because ultimately I think the consistency is that’s it’s a cappella. The consistency is the sound and trying to surprise people with what you can do without instruments.”

BRE Presents brings the tour to Penn State. Tickets for Straight No Chaser are nonrefundable and may not be exchanged for tickets to a Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State presentation.
