Tuscan Sun
Rustic Music from Baroque Italy
Apollo’s Fire, The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra
Jeannette Sorrell, artistic director

7:30 pm Thursday, October 8, 2020

Apollo’s Fire, which has performed six times at Schwab Auditorium, evokes a summer evening in old Tuscany in the outdoor concert Tuscan Sun. Love songs by Baroque masters meet traditional street tunes in this exuberant music party.

The one-hour performance, recorded August 21, 2020, at Gervasi Vineyard in Canton, Ohio, features six members of Apollo’s Fire: Amanda Powell, soprano; Jeannette Sorrell, harpsichord and direction; Brian Kay, vocals and plucked instruments; Andrew Fouts, violin; Jamey Haddad, percussion; and Kivie Cahn-Lipman, cello and gamba.

Before the concert, Marica Tacconi, associate director of the Penn State School of Music and professor of musicology, hosts a 20-minute conversation with Sorrell.

The concert program includes music by Marco Uccellini, Giralomo Frescobaldi, Diego Ortiz, Gaspar Sanz, Francesco Corbetta, Tarquinio Merula, and Antonio Bertali.

Named for the classical god of music and the sun, Apollo’s Fire, founded by Sorrell and based in Cleveland, revived the Baroque ideal that music should evoke the listeners’ passions. The ensemble is a collection of artists who share Sorrell’s passion for drama and rhetoric. London’s The Independent hails Apollo’s Fire as “one of the pre-eminent period-instrument ensembles.”
