Event Description

The Bach: St. Matthew Passion program features the second of the passion oratorios written by Johann Sebastian Bach circa 1727 for Good Friday services. He created the musical work for two vocal ensembles and orchestras, and emphasized the emotional resonance and psychological nuance using a dramatic vocal structure and biblical story.

In celebration of the massive work’s 300th anniversary year, the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, conducted by Maestro Masaaki Suzuki, will bring the sacred oratorio live to the stage on a United States tour.

The Monteverdi Choir has been recognized as one of the greatest and most influential choirs in the world for more than six decades. Through a combination of technical excellence and historically informed performance practice, the choir strives to bring heart, emotion, and drama to its performances.

For more than forty years, the English Baroque Soloists ensemble has challenged the preconceptions of audiences around the world. The innovative period-instrument musicians present a warm-but-direct, technically accurate playing style.

Conductor Masaaki Suzuki, founder of Bach Collegium Japan, is one of the world’s authorities on the music of Bach. He has recorded the complete cycle of Bach’s sacred cantatas, an achievement that has earned international acclaim for its expressive depth and stylistic integrity.
