A century ago, in the aftermath of World War I, a predominantly African-American neighborhood in uptown Manhattan emerged as one of the leading cultural centers of the country.

London’s Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble will perform music by Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn and Sally Beamish in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in Schwab Auditorium.

As part of its 2019–20 season, the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State has curated eight presentations that will tell the stories of African-American life in the United States throughout the last several centuries.

The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State has been awarded a three-year grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The $600,000 grant will support initiatives that will more deeply integrate the performing arts with Penn State’s research and pedagogical missions.
